Children and Adults make "Posies in Pots" - small flower arrangements at FallFest

Rain Didn't Keep Potential Flower Arrangers Away at FallFest 2024

In spite of off and on rain showers throughout the day, some 440 small flower arrangements were made by guests at FallFest. Breaking with years’ tradition, parents were allowed to make arrangements along with their children in 2024. Each arrangement was unique!

Flowers were donated by Kennicott Bros. (wholesale florists), Schoen Family Farm and a Community Roots garden, along with contributions from ENGC members’ gardens and 10 pots of various sizes and colors of mums.

ENGC members were kept busy filling the tables with flowers and helping guests select complementary flowers and foliage for their arrangements. In addition to making “posies in pots,” children could select a small painted rock to add to their home garden.

"ARE YOU MY MOTHER" STORYBOOK
DEPICTED ON ENGC 2024 CBG TREE

On November 17th, ENGC members met at the Cleveland Botanical Garden to complete a project that began in March — planning and creating decorations for their 10 -foot tree. “Storybooks,” — not necessarily holiday books — was the theme for the affiliate club trees in 2024. ENGC picked the childhood favorite “Are You My Mother” by Eastwood.

The story details the adventures of a baby bird that has fallen from its nest and is searching for its mother. Baby bird encounters barnyard animals as well as farm equipment in its search. Characters it meets are displayed on the tree along with red-framed disks that quote text from the book as the story unfolds. Ribbon with bird tracks winds around the tree, guiding baby bird’s journey, ending when it finds mother bird in the nest — holding out a worm for baby bird’s dinner.

In addition to the decorating crew, members of the club contributed dried hydrangeas, sedum, seed pods and painted alliums for tree filler. Red wood ornaments adorned with dried queen Anne’s lace “snowflakes” and mushrooms made from acorn caps added colorful accents. Jane Petrie, who chaired the project and hosted planning meetings at her home, said, “Of all the trees we’ve decorated for the Garden, I think this one is the best.” It surely will be a favorite of young visitors!

Characters from the book included on the tree are baby birds, a cow, a boat, a dog, "grunt" - a stream shovel, and mother bird (with a worm)
Planning meetings for the 2024 tree began in March.
